Andiroba oil acts as an emollient, rich in palmitic and oleic acids, in addition to an unsaponifiable fraction formed mainly by terpenoids, especially limonoids, which are mainly responsible for the biological activity of the oil.
 
It has high moisturizing activity, indicated for product formulas that promote skin renewal, in addition to its anti-inflammatory and healing properties. It can be used in formulas for the treatment of sensitive and acneic skins.
 
The repellency was tested applied on the skin and as part of a candle. Cosmetically applied the addition of 3% Andiroba Oil lead to a mosquito repellency of 71% 1 hour after the application and 55% 2 hours after the application. 
 
The candle results were more detailed and the performance was also much stronger! The first trial was aimed to measure only the repellency. The mosquitos were for this purpose placed in a defined environment, which holes, so that the mosquitos could escape. A candle with or without 3% Andiroba Oil was afterwards lit to liberate the odor. After this period the environment was inspected to calculate the number of mosquitos that escaped. The placebo showed only an escape rate below 5%, while 100% of the mosquitos escaped with the addition of Andiroba Oil, showing a very strong repellency.    
 
The second test with the candle was afterwards aimed to show the bite protection. Mosquitos, a candle and the test persons were therefore placed in a specific environment with no holes for two hours. The candle was lit for the entire time and the number of bites were counted after the 2 hour period. This approach was repeated multiple time over a span of three days and the candle with Andiroba oil was able to prevent mosquito bites throughout the entire time!
