Candelilla wax is a wax extracted from a shrub called Euphorbia cerifera, which is native to northern Mexico. The wax protects the plant from environmental influences and prevents excessive evaporation. Candelilla wax consists of hydrocarbons (approx. 50 %, C29-C33, mainly C31), esters, phytosterols, free fatty acids, free fatty alcohols and resins. 
 
This hard vegetable wax is mainly used for cosmetic and pharmaceutical stick formulations. However, it is also suitable for W/O emulsions. 
 
Candelilla wax has exceptional oil retention properties and improves the stability and texture of cosmetic products. In sticks, candelilla wax provides good mould release, strength and surface gloss. 
 
It is often used in combination with carnauba wax, beeswax and other waxes where it improves skin feel, adhesion and release properties. Due to its hardness and relatively high melting point, candelilla wax increases the softening point of sticks.
