KanuFresh™ is a naturally derived active ingredient obtained from the leaves of kanuka (Kunzea ericoides), a botanical species native to southeastern Australia. The leaves contain a rich profile of naturally occurring bioactives, including phloroglucinol and chromone derivatives, as well as polyphenols such as quercetin, chlorogenic acid, gallic acid, ferulic acid and catechin. KanuFresh™ is produced from the kanuka leaves through a proprietary aqueous extraction process, harnessing these botanical compounds for targeted sweat, odor and skin-comfort benefits.
 
To understand how KanuFresh™ works, it is important to first understand how sweat is produced. Sweating is a natural physiological process that helps the body regulate its temperature. When the body becomes warm through exercise, heat exposure or emotional stress, signals from the brain activate the eccrine sweat glands. Nerves release acetylcholine, which triggers a cascade of events inside the sweat gland cells.
 
First, calcium levels within the cells change, activating ion channels that allow calcium and other electrolytes to move across the cell membrane. This activates calcium-activated chloride channels (CaCC), causing chloride ions to move into the gland and drawing sodium and water with them.
 
A transporter called NKCC1 continuously replenishes the electrolytes needed to sustain this process. The resulting fluid is released into the sweat duct and reaches the skin surface, where evaporation provides the body’s cooling effect. Body odor is not caused by fresh sweat itself but arises when certain skin bacteria convert odorless precursor substances into volatile, foul-smelling compounds. A key metabolic pathway involves Staphylococcus hominis and the enzymes PepV and PatB (C-S-lyase), which sequentially convert an odorless precursor substance into the pungent, sulfur-containing compound 3M3SH.
